Christian Vieri claims he would ‘be top scorer in current Inter Milan team’ in cheeeky dig at misfiring Romelu Lukaku – THE INFORMANTI

Former Inter Milan striker Christian Vieri insists he would be top scorer at the club in an apparent dig at Romelu Lukaku.

Simone Inzaghi’s side occupy second place in the table but look set to miss out on the Serie A title for the second-consecutive season as they lie 18 points behind leaders Napoli.

Lukaku scored just his third league goal of the season during their defeat at Spezia on Friday

Inter were beaten 2-1 at relegation-threatened Spezia on Friday night with Lukaku netting just his third league goal of the season and fifth overall.

Vieri, who spent six years at the San Siro between 1999-2005, believes Inter’s problems derive from poor finishing.

“Inter create ten chances per game at home, they play well. You have [Denzel] Dumfries who crosses, [Federico] Dimarco who crosses, you have [Nicolo] Barella”, said Vieri.

“You have players putting Lukaku in a good position. I’ll tell you one thing, if I played for this Inter team, I would win top scorer every year.”

The Chelsea loanee’s second spell at Inter has been plagued by injuries and has been unable to recapture the form shown during his first spell at the club when Inter ended their eleven-year title drought.

A £97.5million move to Chelsea followed Inter’s scudetto triumph but Lukaku was largely restricted to a bit-part role bench after failing to fit into Thomas Tuchel’s plan.

Since returning to Italy, Lukaku has made his intentions clear of not wanting to return to west London despite having three years remaining on his contract.

It remains to be seen whether Inter opt to secure Lukaku either on another loan or a long-term deal with the Belgian reluctant to leave the Serie A club for a second time.
