The two teams are fighting at opposite ends of the Premier League table, with the Magpies firmly in the hunt for Europe and the home side battling for survival.

The home side struggled at the start of the season but have since become more solid defensively, and in particular have made themselves very tough to beat at their home stadium.

Steve Cooper’s side are unbeaten in their last nine home league matches dating all the way back to September, which has led them sitting 14th heading into the weekend.

Despite the unbeaten home record, Forest have only picked up two points from their last five matches in the league and have won just one of their last nine in all competitions, which has dragged them firmly back into the relegation picture.

Despite their 14th position, the east Midlands side are only two points above the drop zone, as five points separate the bottom nine teams ahead of the midweek fixtures in the battle for survival.

Newcastle travel to Nottingham having got back to winning ways last weekend after five matches without a win in all competitions.

The Magpies’ 2-1 home win over Wolves saw them climb back up into fifth place, and currently trail Tottenham by only four points with two games in hand in the Tyneside club’s unlikely quest for Champions League football next season.

Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to start the weekend with a win to pile the pressure on those sides around them, with Spurs facing a potentially tricky trip to the south coast to take on Southampton.

Forest have won two of the last three matches they’ve played against Newcastle, though were defeated in their last meeting back on the opening day of the season.

Newcastle have lost all of their last three league matches at the City Ground though, without a win since March 1999.
