Fans think Tyson Fury’s old comments about his ‘hardest fight ever’ explain why he could be ‘ducking’ Oleksandr Usyk – THE INFORMANTI

Tyson Fury is widely recognised as the number one heavyweight in the world of boxing today, but some boxing fans still believe he is ‘ducking’ Oleksandr Usyk.

The WBC title-holder stopped Deontay Wilder twice to win and retain his belt after previously beating Wladimir Klitschko to first become champion several years prior.

Previously, the only other man to stake a claim to Fury’s throne was Anthony Joshua, but his defeats to Oleksandr Usyk have shaken up the heavyweight scene once more.

Now, Usyk is the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight world champion and the man who most would say has the best chance of defeating Fury.

And the Gypsy King’s previous comments from a 2018 appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast appear support this theory.

“I’ve been in fights where it’s been total wars for as long as the fight lasted, ie the Steve Cunningham fight in 2013,” Fury said when asked to name the toughest fight of his career.

“I come out here all confident, run straight onto an overhand right – down!

“I was looking up at Madison Square Garden’s roof and I thought: ‘F*** me, it’s now back to the farm, boy, get up.

“Believe it or not, this is gonna sound strange – Cunningham was the hardest fight I ever did have in my whole career, amateur or professional.

“The reason being he was very slippery.

“The way I explain Cunningham – it was like a Conger Eel all full of oil in front of me. I couldn’t pin him down.

“He was light on his feet, he was weighing 208lbs or something.

Fury had to rise off the canvas to beat Cunningham back in 2013

“He was a three-time cruiserweight champion and then he stepped up into the heavyweights.

“He was a slick, talented boxer and I tried to walk him down using my size and power, but he was just outboxing me.

“What I’m good at – boxing, moving, slipping and sliding – I couldn’t do against Steve Cunningham because he was quicker than me.

“It was like he was a better boxer all round than me. I couldn’t do nothing with him, and he knocked me over even though he was a light puncher supposedly.

Usyk possesses many of the traits Fury that described as troublesome about Cunningham

“I walked right onto it, it came from the back of the hall, big overhand right, right on the chin.

“I thought, ‘This is it, US debut I’ve been knocked out. Tyson Fury, get up and kick his ass.’

“So I got up, I just went straight forward at him, no more boxing now.

“You might be ahead on points, but sooner or later I’m gonna get you. And I did, in round seven I felt him going weak because I was pushing him back.

Usyk has accused Fury of ‘whining and ducking’

“After he got tired I hit him with a heavy body shot in round seven and he didn’t recover and then I pushed his head back and knocked him clean out with a right hand.

“That was the only time he was ever knocked out in his career, even to today.

“I’m not gonna make any excuses, Steve Cunningham was a better boxer than me.”

Fury and Usyk are now in advanced negotiations trying to finalise a fight for April 29 at Wembley Stadium, but some fans remain doubtful it will happen and are pointing to Fury’s old comments about Cunningham as the reason why.

Fingers crossed everything gets resolved and an undisputed heavyweight world champion is crowned next month.

Yes fury is scared lmaoo . If Cunningham was his toughest fight and Wallin gave him problems.. what would he think of a way better/slicker boxer like usyk?— k1ckb@ck n3xtd00r (@c0wb0yst41kf4n) March 13, 2023

Sadly, this is why @Tyson_Fury is trying everything to avoid fighting @usykaa. Steve Cunningham is no where near as good as Aleksander. I like Tyson but he’s running scared on this one and in serious danger of destroying his credibility as wannabe #GOAT 🤔 I hope he is ok 🙏🏻 👍 Tim McSweeney (@_TimMcSweeney) March 14, 2023

If Steve Cunningham give fury problems like this and arguably beat him( according to fury’s own words). Can you imagine what Usyk will do to him? Oh my lord— Sameer 🇦🇫 (@Afgbeast67) March 11, 2023
